Key Scripture
2 Corinthians 5:17-18 (ESV):
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation…”
Devotional
We often think of “reconciliation” as fixing a broken relationship between two people or groups. We picture high-stakes peace talks, mending family feuds, or bridging societal divides. But the 40 Days of Reconciliation journey teaches us a foundational truth: Reconciliation is an ‘inside-out’ principle.
The journey doesn’t begin by pointing at what others need to fix. It begins by holding up a mirror.
From the daily readings, we see the focus is on our own internal world. It asks: Do you feel spiritually “stuck”? Is your mind holding you captive (Day 19)? Are you fighting the wrong battles (Day 17)? Are you living with true spiritual wisdom (Day 16), or do you just have a reputation for being alive while feeling “dead” on the inside (Day 14)?
This 40-day journey is significant for an individual because it encourages us to stop, look inward, and address the core of our own conflicts. We cannot bring peace to our homes, communities, or nations if we are at war within ourselves. We cannot offer unconditional love to a divided world (Day 9) if our own hearts are full of unaddressed desires, fears, and hidden sins (Day 10).
The 40 Days of Reconciliation is your personal invitation to get “unstuck.” It is the process of silencing the inner chaos so you can hear God clearly. Before you can be part of the “ministry of reconciliation” to others, God must first do the work of reconciliation in you—healing your mind, defining your purpose, and making you a “new creation.” True, lasting peace with others is simply the overflow of a heart that has first found its peace with God.
Questions for Reflection
- When you first hear the word “reconciliation,” do you immediately think of fixing others, or do you think of your own internal state?
- How can you expect to resolve conflicts with others if, as “Day 10” suggests, you are still primarily driven by your “own desire to win”?

Prayer Prompt
Father, thank You for first reconciling me to You through Christ. Before I try to be a peacemaker, please bring peace to my own mind and heart. Make me a new creation today so that any ministry of reconciliation I do comes from a place of true, personal healing.
