The Power of Personal Responsibility

An Interview with Dr. Laurette Wills (Session 2)

In Book of Genesis 3:17–19, we encounter one of the earliest patterns of human behavior. This pattern is the tendency to shift blame rather than take responsibility. When confronted, Adam blamed Eve. Eve, in turn, blamed the serpent.

Dr. Laurette Willis explains that an excuse is not simply a reason. It is a reason wrapped around a lie. There are legitimate reasons for our actions—but excuses often hide something deeper:

  • Fear of failure
  • Fear of judgment
  • Fear of responsibility

Scripture teaches us that the fear of man is a trap. It is a snare that prevents us from becoming who we are meant to be. When we constantly point fingers outward, we forget a powerful truth. If you point one finger at others, several point back at you. True transformation begins when we stop explaining and start owning.

Taking responsibility is not about condemnation—it is about freedom. What if Adam had responded differently?
What if, instead of blaming, he had said: “Lord, I take responsibility.” We may not know how history would have changed. However, we do know this: Our future changes when we take responsibility today.

God never calls us to do something without enabling us to do it. As First Epistle of John reminds us: God is love. When we yield ourselves, we become vessels through which that love flows.

There is a powerful truth often overlooked: God is not looking for ability—He is looking for availability. You don’t need to be perfect. You need to be willing.

When you surrender and say, “Lord, use me,” something shifts:

  • Fear loses its grip
  • Purpose becomes clearer
  • Transformation begins

Rethinking Self-Care: A Kingdom Perspective

In today’s world, self-care is often framed as self-focus. But Scripture offers a broader perspective. Jesus teaches:

“Love God… and love your neighbor as yourself.”

This implies something important: You can’t love others well if you neglect your own well-being. Self-care is not selfish—it is stewardship.

When we are:

  • Physically drained
  • Emotionally overwhelmed
  • Spiritually disconnected

…it becomes difficult to live fully for God or serve others effectively.

Renewal of Mind and Body

True transformation involves both spiritual truth and practical action. The Word of God is not passive—it is active. As we align our thoughts and words with Scripture:

  • Our minds are renewed
  • Our patterns begin to change
  • Even our bodies respond

Speaking truth—especially God’s Word—has power. It reshapes how we think, how we feel, and how we live.

Faith in Action: “Do Whatever He Tells You”

In Gospel of John (the wedding at Cana), Mary gives a simple but profound instruction:

“Whatever He tells you to do, do it.”

This is where transformation becomes practical.

It may look like:

  • Taking better care of your health
  • Building new habits
  • Letting go of destructive patterns
  • Choosing discipline over comfort

Faith is not just belief—it is obedience in action.

The Discipline of Surrender

According to First Epistle of Peter 5:5–7: God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. Surrender is not weakness—it is alignment. It means:

  • Releasing control
  • Trusting God with your burdens
  • Letting Him carry what you can’t
